The Global Alliance for the Prevention of Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS)
GAPPS brings together an international, multidisciplinary team of maternal and child health researchers to address the worldwide problems of preterm births and stillbirth, which account for millions of infant deaths a year and immeasurable suffering worldwide.
Based at Seattle Children’s Hospital, GAPPS works to bridge basic science, epidemiology, and applied public health research to accelerate the translation of discovery science of these under-researched issues. Executive Director Craig E. Rubens, MD, PhD, is a leading researcher in the field of perinatal bacterial infections and a prominent pediatric infectious disease specialist.
Since 2007, GAPPS has pursued an ambitious agenda including research in the biology, epidemiology, risk factors, and interventions associated with preterm birth and stillbirth. It is providing a forum for the world’s top researchers in the field to exchange knowledge and identify research gaps. Over time, GAPPS will increase understanding of the magnitude of this devastating public health problem, and by promoting the most effective interventional strategies, improve maternal and child health outcomes on a global scale.
